Here at Clean That Carpet, we often find ourselves cleaning rugs with an avalanche of stains and burns caused as a result of smoking. Some have even been Persian rugs, so you can begin to imagine how much damage is caused.
If the financial consequences are not enough to make you consider the transition over to vapes, then consider the health aspects instead.
All you seasoned vapers out there probably already appreciate how much healthier ecigs are. However, with more and more voices in government and the industry calling for regulation, it is always refreshing when a study outlines the benefits of these devices and calls for sensible regulations rather than an outright ban!
A major scientific review, published in the Addiction Journal (available for download for a limited time) used all the currently available research on electronic cigarettes and e liquids. This review concluded that although the long-term health effects of ecig use are unknown, compared with conventional cigarettes they are much less harmful.
The international team poured over pages and pages of research and studies conducted on ecigs and vaping in general. In total, 81 studies were examined on a range of topics including but not limited to; safety concerns, chemical levels in eliquid and vapour and the use of ecigs by smokers and non-smokers.
Peter Hajek of Queen Mary University of London, who headed up the review team which consisted of a number of leading tobacco researchers, said: “the evidence we currently have is clear: e-cigarettes should be allowed to compete against conventional cigarettes in the marketplace. Healthcare professionals may advise smokers who are unwilling to cease nicotine use to switch to e-cigarettes. Smokers who have not managed to stop with current treatments may also benefit from switching to e-cigarettes.”
Martin Dockrell, at Public Health England, told the BBC: “Increasing numbers of smokers are turning to these devices as an aid to quitting, and there is emerging evidence that they are effective for this purpose. In order to maximise the benefits to public health while managing the risks, regulation of e-cigarettes needs to be proportionate and designed to ensure the availability of safe and effective products, and to prevent the marketing of e-cigarettes to young people and non-smokers.”
Though the experts state that there are areas of ecigs that need to be researched more thoroughly, they almost unanimously agree that based on the current evidence available, introducing stricter regulations, regulating them like cigarettes or banning them, cannot be justified. Therefore, any moves towards regulation in the future need to be properly informed, based on solid empirical evidence and above all, proportionate.
The popularity of ecigs has grown enormously in recent years, and with over two million users in the UK alone, any decision to regulate or restrict their usage may well become one of the hot health debates of our time.
